When scientists looked into this set of bones, they found specific characteristics that suggested bipedalism. For instance, the foot was built in a way that permitted the type of toe push-offs that we enjoy today but four-legged apes lack. The pelvic bones, the way the legs were set in the pelvis, and the way the bones of the leg sat together all suggest upright walking, too. It may be why Ardi did not move exactly as we do now, but bipedalism as an everyday mode of moving does appear to be the case with fossils at least 4.4 million years ago.
