A licking machine (oh, yeah, a lopping machine!) Purdue University created a device that required 364 licks to reach a Tootsie Pop’s center. Twenty individuals performed the same experiment at the institution. The average time it took to get to the center was 364 licks. Another licking device, developed at the University of Michigan, took 411 licks for the Tootsie Pop’s center. Swarthmore Schools had 144 licks. This depends on whether the participant is a teenager or an automated licker.
Tootsie Roll Industries’ official website says that a group of engineers from Perdue University invented a locking mechanism. This is a licking system designed to act as a human tongue. And what were the results? Their average of 364 licks was required to reach the center. You might think this would resolve the issue, but there are other officials and informal licking tests that have shown very different results.

Reddit was the place where the discussion was rekindled when one user shared the Perdue-University study’s results. UnstuckTimePilgrim stated that they performed their lick testing as children, and it took 1,150 attempts to reach the center. They received a Tootsie Roll Company certificate and neighborhood fame to recognize their efforts. Other users shared similar results, with lick counts from 1,012 up to 1,436. Freeman7-13 claimed that it took only 800 licks for a Tootsie Pop science experiment to be completed at school.
Even though it’s been half a century since the Tootsie Pop was invented, we still don’t seem to be able to agree on the exact number of licks needed to reach its center. So I googled it as any curious person would. I was surprised at the amount of information I found. Tootsie Brand has a page listing three schools that participated in an experiment. Purdue University accumulated 364 and 252 licks, respectively, from using a machine to imitate a human lick. The University of Michigan collected 411, and Swarthmore Junior High School gathered 144 licks. However, Tootsie insists there is no definitive solution.

The TootsiePop chocolate was quite intriguing. Although it was unpleasant when I first tried the TootsiePop, I was soon pleasantly surprised by its deliciousness. Unfortunately, I don’t recall precisely when I began to enjoy Tootsie Rolls centers. Perhaps it was the chocolate in the Tootsie rolls, but I’m unsure.
The center of the Tootsie Roll was at 575 licks. Because of the actual chocolate in this tootsie pop, I believe that this one took more licks.
