Understanding how to take care of your bonsai tree isn’t as hard as you may believe. Of course, maintaining your bonsai’s health is more complicated than the typical houseplant, but it comes down to mastering just a couple of critical steps. This easy-to-follow guide will help you understand bonsai planting, watering, fertilization, soil, and repotting methods that will allow you to cultivate a healthy bonsai that can last for many generations.
It’s not a secret that I’m never the most adept at taking care of trees, and bonsai plants are notoriously difficult to maintain. (You think that it’s not enough to give them water?). However, I wanted to see whether these tiny trees are as complex as they appear, so I reached out to a handful of bonsai experts to ask their minds on the art.
What is Bonsai?
Bonsai is a uniquely Japanese art form used to make dwarfed trees that look like real trees but are more diminutive enough to be kept in small houseplant pots. The trees have been used to decorate numerous old-fashioned Japanese homes for long periods. However, in recent times bonsai trees have gained widespread recognition as attractive ornaments for modern homes.
If you’re a new bonsai owner, then you’ll surely need to learn more about the specific requirements for caring for these particular trees. This article will cover the basics of care guidelines and basic guidelines to grow and maintain this bonsai tree.
Bonsai tree maintenance
While Bonsai trees are even more delicate than your typical houseplant, some fundamental guidelines will allow anyone to care for the tree properly. Please note where you put it and how you ensure that it is adequately watered.
On this page, we provide the most basic and advanced Bonsai care methods. It is essential to adapt these guidelines for your particular tree species. In our online Bonsai Courses, we will also teach the essential Bonsai techniques, so be sure you check out some of our free samples available there too!
Looking after Your Bonsai
Bonsai can be described as an art form that is the Japanese art of cultivating gorgeous trees that are miniature. Any plant or tree can be a Bonsai, provided you follow the correct maintenance and styling methods. One thing to keep in mind is that Bonsai is a tree, and it has the needs of a tree. Trees respond to the care you provide and will flourish with your care!
Bonsai in Balance
The most important thing to remember when it comes to bonsai is to keep your top growth and root growth in check. “The roots won’t support too much top growth, and eventually the tree fails,” Justin says.
Lighting
Bonsais require about five to 6 hours of continuous light each day. When your plant is located in an area where sunlight isn’t particularly intense, it is possible to boost the hours (up to 16 hours per day) that your tree gets sunlight to make up for. If you decide to move your tree from a location with less light to an area with more intense direct light, do it slowly to prevent the tree from being damaged. Please do not use artificial (incandescent) lighting since they do not provide the complete spectrum of light your bonsai needs to grow correctly.
Because environmental conditions change constantly depending on the season and the time of day, regularly changing the position of your tree might be the best strategy for managing humidity, lighting, and temperature, based on the situation.
Watering
It is a significant and challenging aspect of caring for and maintaining bonsai trees in determining the time and method to water them. It’s crucial to remember that the amount of water required will depend on various factors.
Bonsai Fertilizer for Trees
The tree’s roots deplete nutrients from the soil when it expands. In the natural world, these nutrients are replenished through decaying organic matter. However, your tree’s life is an extremely restricted space, and it’s up to you to ensure that your soil is healthy by regularly fertilizing it.
Look for the label
Justin says the requirements for watering and pruning time as well as indoor and outdoor. the outdoor location and light exposure are dependent on the kind of tree. “The most important thing is to prune it and keep in mind to treat it according to the species that the tree is,” Justin says.
Pruning and shaping Your Bonsai Tree
Pruning is vital to keep bonsai plants small and maintain their compact size. There are two primary kinds of pruning structural and maintenance pruning.
Maintenance pruning helps strengthen trees by initiating growth. In addition, cutting young shoots and leaves exposes the leaves beneath the sun and air, which helps strengthen the tree and improves its overall health.
The areas that require pruning for maintenance are the branches, buds, and leaves. Pruning branches away encourages the development of smaller branches and lets you control the tree’s appearance. In addition, pruning away branches creates more negligible leaf growth that encourages the development of smaller leaf sizes.
In general, it is recommended to cut your bonsai whenever you notice the growth of a new plant that’s beginning to alter the form of the tree unpleasantly. For example, if you have a flowering bonsai, pruning is recommended in spring to help stimulate more flowers to bloom next year.
Structural pruning is a sophisticated method that is best done when the tree is not in use. This involves the removal of the tree’s main structural branches. It also requires the expertise of a specialist to ensure that the tree can recuperate.
Another method of shaping the bonsai plant is by wiring the branches. You can alter the growth and shape of particular branches simply by wrapping wire around the branches. Wiring is best done in the winter months when the leaves of the bonsai trees have fallen off. Keep watch on the branch’s growth and take it down as needed. If the branch grows too quickly, it may become a wire and cause scarring.
