If I round everything used daily, my AirPods would be among the top spots on the list. They’re so often used that I’ve usually forgotten they’re within my ears. (A massive, frightening moment when entering the bathroom.)
Although I love my AirPods however, I hate how easy it can be to get them lost without mentioning the scum that they accumulate. It’s good to know that cleaning your AirPods is simple. However, the process of finding them is an entirely different tale.
I don’t know how many times I’ve been exploring bags and blankets as I retraced my steps, only to realize that the earbuds were in my bag, always inside my pockets. It’s sometimes difficult to locate wireless earbuds or even to know they’re missing initially at an unlucky time, such as when you’re about to start (or done) washing laundry that has them within the hamper.
The Drying Method: Take any water that is left in the AirPods
The process of restoring AirPods requires regular drying. Make sure they are dry and cool and out of hot and direct sunlight. Place your AirPods inside a sealed container filled with silica gel for 24 to 48 days. Silica gel sachets are available in separate packages and can be found in brand-new shoe boxes and electronic packaging.
Contrary to popular belief, rice is not recommended. Rice is a great absorber of moisture. However, it also brings dirt and microscopic particles to the AirPods that could be damaging. Dust from rice can also clog the microphones and speakers, which can affect the quality of sound.
Do not use heat sources from outside to accelerate drying. Don’t use the oven, a hair dryer, or a radiator. The heat can damage AirPods’ vulnerable internal parts, causing further problems. It is recommended to allow at least 48 hours before combining the AirPods for drying completely. The time frame may seem long, but internal components should be dry.
It’s the same procedure as AirPods Pro, but the Ear tips are more crucial. Dry them separately to prevent moisture capture. AirPods Pro are water-resistant; however, they need complete drying following washing. If you’re wondering what you can do to remove water from AirPod Pros, adhere to these instructions, paying special attention to the Ear tips.
When drying, AirPods must be rotated, exposing all sides to the air. This will prevent water from pooling.
Be sure to check your AirPods after drying them.
Once dried, you can check if your AirPods were able to withstand the unexpected washing. Make sure to pair them with your mobile. A good first indication is an internet connection. Listen to an audio recording and check for issues. Take note of the volume and quality. If you can hear cracking, distortion, or muted sound, your speakers might be damaged or damp.
The next step is to record or phone for a microphone test. Be sure that your voice sounds unmistakable and clear.
Examine the inside of your AirPods for damage from water and corrosion in the charging connectors. The presence of residue or color could indicate the presence of water.
Utilize your AirPods for a prolonged period to evaluate the battery. If the battery’s drain rate is higher than normal, then water exposure might have weakened it.
While water-resistant, AirPods Pro cannot endure an entire washing cycle. Certain AirPods work fine after being washed, whereas some are damaged permanently. Some users are wondering, “Do AirPods remain functional after being washed? ” It depends on the particular circumstances surrounding the washing event.
If your AirPods work, keep an eye on them for a couple of days. Damage from water could affect their efficiency later on, so be attentive.
What to Do if Your AirPods Get Wet?
Dry out the Excess Water
While it’s not something you should worry about, believe us when we say that it’s important to remain at peace and mindful. Handling electronic devices with water inside requires careful focus to avoid causing damage.
Use a dry, soft, and lint-free microfiber cloth to clean the exterior of the AirPods to avoid water infiltration to the inside. Soak up every drop of water on the outside. Gently shake the earbuds to release water from inside. Take care of the area around the speaker. Wipe the earbuds with a cloth to remove too much water.
If the charging container is damp, you can place it upside down with the lid opened. Be sure that it’s not being charged. Additionally, if you own a kit for cleaning with a cotton swab, you could use it to absorb the liquid.
If the sun isn’t burning hot, you can put AirPods and the case to the sun. Also, you can use a hairdryer, but extreme heat may cause more harm. Therefore, you should be cautious regarding this.
Use the Water Eject Shortcut (iOS Devices)
Apple provides a Water Eject shortcut feature designed to eliminate water from the speaker and other holes, preventing the damage water can cause. This feature can also be utilized to eliminate water droplets within the AirPods.
Important: Switch to the AirPods and then connect them to the device. Otherwise, your earbuds could be destroyed.
If you’d like to use it, you must:
- Open the Water Eject Shortcut via your iPhone and tap Add Shortcut to save it.
- Then, open Shortcuts.
- Click on Water Eject and select Start.
- Be patient until you receive confirmation of the success of the procedure.
Make sure to remove AirPods using Desiccant.
Drying or desiccant agents like Silica benefit from absorbing all liquid around and protect devices from damage caused by liquids. If you own a packet filled with Silica gel, then follow these procedures as follows:
Put the AirPods inside the container.
Put silica gel or another similar desiccant into the container. Be sure that the AirPods are completely enclosed on all sides, even the top.
Keep the container in a dry location at room temperature for two days or longer. This gives the Desiccant a satisfying time to absorb any remaining moisture.
Visit an Authorised Apple Service Center
Finally, suppose you find that the AirPods don’t work, or you suspect there’s evidence of liquid inside your earbuds. In that case, we recommend you contact Apple Support or visit an authorized service center. The service center will open and wash the insides of your AirPods and examine for water damage, if there is any.
Preventing Future Accidents: Protecting Your AirPods
Avoid laundry disasters by following these tips:
- Develop a routine: Always check your pockets before washing, and clean all pockets before taking clothes off to wash.
- Choose a specific location. When not being used, you can store your AirPods at a specific location. An itty-bitty tray or plate close to where you wash your clothes could bring back memories.
- Consider investing in a waterproof case. Consider an alternative for added protection. It’ll only benefit when the AirPods are inside the case. However, it could provide you with peace of mind.
- Take a look at AppleCarePlus: This additional warranty protects against two damages, such as washing water.
- Take care when wearing: Take off your AirPods before strenuous exercise or during inclement weather.
These guidelines can decrease the chance of washing your AirPods. Preventing damage is typically less complicated than fixing it.
Avoid These Mistakes When Your Earbuds Get Wet
If you’re on the go, your earbuds are bound to become wet. But don’t despair! By paying a bit of attention, you’ll be able to stay clear of these common mistakes and ensure that your earbuds are in top form.
- The most common error people make is using their ears even when they’re damp. This could harm the earbuds and your ears since the moisture could create a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. If your earbuds become waterlogged, remove them and let them dry completely before putting them back together.
- Avoid putting the earbuds into rice! This is a common error users make after their phones become wet, but it’s not a good idea with the earbuds. Rice will not absorb water and can actually harm the earbuds.
- A second error is that you are not using the appropriate cleaner. Certain cleaning products can harm the earbuds’ coating, so be cautious when selecting a product. Choose a cleaner that is specifically created for cleaning electronics.
