Acer Predator Helios 500 (2021) review Review: Build quality and design
Its Helios 500 is the USS Iowa of laptops. It is significant, solid, and cumbersome. With a weight of 3.9kg, I’d classify it as portable and not mobile, and the 400 dimensions of 319x35mm put it in the middle of the realm of large laptops. If you intend to carry it around, you’ll need a good backpack to accommodate both it and the two 775g PSU bricks.
Except for its lid, which is aluminum, and the lid is made of aluminum, the Helios is constructed entirely of plastic, yet it has a surprisingly tough feel. It’s excellent, and the lid is relatively rigid for a product designed to hold a 17.3 display and just 5mm thick.
The design is less slack than I had hoped, similar to Lenovo’s latest Legion models. Switch off the stunning Close Encounters light show – there are RGB LED strips along the four corners and around the trackpad. Each keyboard can be assigned a unique RGB color. It appears to be less of the stereotypical gaming notebook you would find on any of Acer’s lesser Nitro models. The black color scheme is elegantly minimalist and only has the large Blue LED button on top of the keyboard and a similar illuminated Predator branding on its lid, giving the impression of a game.
Connectivity is plentiful. It has two USB Type C and three USB Type A 3.2 Gen 2 ports. HDMI 2.1, Mini DisplayPort 1.4 video feeds, the Gigabit RJ45 socket, and separate 3.5mm headphones and mic Jacks. The best part is that both Type-C ports can be used with Thunderbolt 4. The two DC-in jacks can be well-placed at the rear. The Helios 500 has access to 600W of power when both are connected. To help keep your desk clean, Acer has bundled a rubber stand that can be used for both PSUs. This may seem like a frivolous addition, but believe me when I say that you’ll be able to appreciate it.
Most powerful
Its Acer Predator Helios 500 is an enormous, 17.3-inch gaming laptop with impressive options. The chromed horned logo and the multi-colored internal lighting give an appearance that resembles a desktop; however, at 8.3 pounds, without the power brick, it’s not the most portable or efficient battery. But, despite this, the Acer has the edge in its gaming power and sheer power.
It’s Acer Predator Helios 500 is powered by an Intel Core i9-11980HK processor with a maximum clock speed of 5 GHz. It utilizes a 10nm SuperFin technology to create the processor. It also has 24MB of L3 memory. The processor has integrated graphics, and the laptop comes with two XL power adapters.
The Acer Helios 500 has two power adapters that are 330W and includes an elastomer gasket that keeps the two together. You’ll need two power adapters to run the GPU in Turbo mode. However, you can also use one of them if you wish to. Its GPU can draw as much as the 165W TGP when in the turbo-mode. It also works using single-power adapters. It has 2 USB 3.0 ports; however, you only need one of them if you wish to simplify things.
Acer Predator Helios 500 (2021) review: Verdict
So what do you think? Is this laptop Helios 500 the best gaming laptop available? Yes. The dimension and mass of the gadget should be considered, along with the extremely poor battery longevity; however, in the quest for the best gaming experience, certain items must be sacrificed. For a substantial amount of money, you’re receiving a stunning display, a top-quality keyboard, and the possibility to boost the performance of the device to the point that you’ll be able to give several gaming desktops a jolt for their price. The paradox of modern technology is that machines designed without compromise usually require sacrifice from their users. And Helios 500 is a prime example. Helios 500 is just one example of a machine built without compromise.
